UTV Troubleshooting Guide
Diagnosis is the first step in UTV repair. Once you’ve found the root of the problem, you’ll have a much easier time focusing your efforts. If you don’t know much about UTV repair, don’t worry. This guide from Big Delta Powersports will help you troubleshoot UTV maintenance issues.
Battery Issues
Problems with a UTV’s electrical system are usually either the result of faulty wiring or a faulty battery. If the wiring seems intact, make sure that the battery is charged. If the battery refuses to recharge when you use a tender on it, the battery is most likely dead and will need to be replaced. If the battery is charged but things still aren’t working right, try cleaning the battery’s terminal connections. You can do this by greasing the terminals, treating them with an anti-corrosive, and then tightening them up. If your UTV has a refillable battery, check the electrolyte levels. Cracks in the cell can cause electrolyte levels to drop faster than normal, and a cracked refillable battery will need to be replaced.
Engine Trouble
If your UTV’s engine isn’t putting out as much power as it should and the gas tank is full, make sure that the injectors aren’t clogged. Other possible culprits include a broken spark plug, a wrecked crankshaft position sensor, or a ruined ignition coil.
If your UTV’s engine is slow to start and the electrical system is functioning normally, low fuel flow is probably the cause. Check the fuel tank to make sure there’s no water in it and inspect the filter, electric fuel pump, and injector for possible defects.
Your UTV’s engine has a cooling system, and this system has the important job of bleeding off excess heat. If the vehicle seems to overheat too easily, make sure that the coolant flow path is clear. Other possible sources of overheating include the fan and the radiator cap.
